Called to Run, Not to Win
By Friends of Kellen Curry
Friends, Family, and Supporters,
New Yorkers will go to the polls on Feb 13th to elect a candidate to fill out the remainder of George Santos' term following his expulsion. Special Elections in New York are unique. A selection committee was formed to hand pick one Republican and one Democrat to compete in the Special Election. The selection process was fair and professionally run, and I want to thank the committee and the Nassau and Queens Republican Parties for considering my candidacy. Unfortunately, we were not selected, and so today we are ending our campaign to represent New York's Third Congressional District.
Thank you to all those who stood with us over the course of our nine month campaign. We had great moments, bad moments and interesting moments (looking at you Jake Tapper). But most of all we got to know a community that is in desperate need of a champion in the halls of Congress. I'm confident we made a mark in the public discourse about the direction of our district and country.
In numerous interviews across local and national outlets we didn’t just talk about the southern border and high inflation. We also talked about expanding the 9/11 victims compensation fund to cover a broader population of first responders after I met a family in the Bethpage neighborhood. The wife was a former NYPD officer on the scene during 9/11 recovery efforts. She was recently diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's at 51. Her law enforcement partner died at 53 of Alzheimer's. Almost 15% of the 9/11 first responders have some form of MCI, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS etc. The next member of Congress should keep pushing to ensure our 9/11 heroes are taken care of.
I'm proud we tackled other issues not often discussed such as youth wellness and pushing for federal grants to help our local public schools address the rising cost of providing youth mental health services. We took a risk and advocated for a program of national service on our website to address our military recruitment challenges which helped raise awareness about the future health of our nation's military. We stood with the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on a long overdue vision to rebuild the campus of one of our District's and America's crown jewels. In short, I believe we elevated the priorities of our district and country in a meaningful way.
I never thought this small town kid from Oklahoma would one day run for Congress in New York but I was happy to answer the call, take on the challenge and make this community my new home. I didn't always get it right but with your encouragement we leave the battlefield with pride.
Thanks for riding with me. God Bless and Happy Holidays.
